Taming one is a priority for players looking to secure fast aerial transport and a formidable aerial combatant. However, finding these majestic beasts requires specific knowledge, as they do not spawn just anywhere on the map.
The Primeval Sky Islands
The primary and most consistent location for griffin spawning is the Therizinosaurus biome, which is located on the various Sky Islands scattered across the map. These floating islands are easily identifiable landmarks that rise high above the main terrain. To reach them, players typically utilize a flying mount or a Tek Glider, navigating through the treacherous mountain passes that lead to the summit.
Identifying the Correct Biome
While the Sky Islands host the griffins, not every island features the correct environmental conditions. Look for the distinct rocky terrain and the presence of the large, passive Therizinosaurus. The ground often features a specific type of red rock formations and sparse, hardy vegetation. If the island is lush and green like a rainforest, or covered in snow like the peak of a mountain, you are likely in the wrong place. The griffin prefers the arid, rocky highlands where the Therizinosaurus roams.
Specific Regional Hotspots
Within the general Sky Island region, griffins show a preference for specific zones. The areas directly surrounding the main Therizinosaurus nest are considered the most active spawning grounds. Additionally, the floating islands located to the north and east of the central island cluster tend to have a higher density of these creatures. Players report consistent success when hunting in the vicinity of the large central mountains that dominate the sky map.

Countering Aerial Competition
It is important to note that the sky belonging to the griffin is also contested by Wyverns and Managarmrs. These aggressive creatures will actively attack griffins on sight, leading to spectacular aerial battles. If you arrive at the spawning location and find the skies empty, it is likely because a Wyvern has claimed the territory. Waiting for a natural conflict to thin the competition, or bringing your own high-tier mount to clear the air, are common strategies to secure the area.
The Taming Process
Once you have located the griffin, the challenge shifts from finding it to subduing it. These creatures are aggressive and will immediately engage upon approach. Utilizing a long-range weapon like a Tek Bow with tranq arrows is the safest method to begin the taming process.
