Initial Diagnostics: Is It Really a Broken Screen?
The first step in troubleshooting a non-responsive display is to resist the urge to assume the worst. Many users assume a black screen means the LCD or LED panel has died, but the issue is often related to power or the external display settings. Before opening the laptop, you should perform a quick check to verify the system is actually on and not just in a low-power state.
Listen for the fans: Do you hear the whir of the cooling system or the hard drive spinning up?
Check the keyboard: Do the Caps Lock or Num Lock lights respond when you press the keys?
Look for external cues: Are the charging lights on, and do you hear the standard Windows startup chime?
Power and Connection Issues
If the laptop seems to be on but the display is dark, the culprit is often an external monitor setting or a power anomaly. Checking Display Output

Software and Driver Conflicts
When the hardware appears to be functioning—fans spin, lights blink—but the screen shows a login screen and then goes black, you are likely dealing with a software or driver issue. A recent Windows update or a graphics driver rollback can corrupt the communication between the operating system and the display panel.
Safe Mode is a powerful diagnostic tool in this scenario. By booting into Safe Mode, you disable all third-party drivers and startup programs.
