Taking apart an IKEA bed is often the first step to a smoother move, a deep clean, or a simple bedroom redesign. While the process might seem intimidating at first glance, breaking down the assembly in the correct order transforms a chore into a manageable task. Preparation and Safety
Before you touch a single screw, preparation is key to a successful disassembly. Clear the area around the bed of any clutter, rugs, or obstacles that could cause you to trip while working. Clearing the Bed Surface
Remove all bedding, pillows, and decorative items from the mattress. If you are working with a storage bed, take out any items stored in the drawers or under the bed frame. This step not only gives you ample space to work but also ensures that you do not accidentally damage or misplace personal belongings during the disassembly.
Removing the Mattress and Box Spring
Begin by lifting the mattress straight up and off the frame. Most mattresses are simply placed on top of the slats and can be removed quickly. If the mattress is difficult to lift, check if there are bed straps holding it in place and undo them first. Set the mattress aside on a flat surface, preferably covered with a blanket to prevent damage.
If your bed includes a box spring, carefully lift it off the frame in the same manner. These components are heavy, so it is wise to have a second person assist you. Placing the box spring on its side against a wall minimizes the space it occupies in your moving vehicle and keeps it out of the way.
Detaching the Headboard and Footboard
The headboard and footboard are usually the main structural elements attached to the side rails. Locate the connecting bolts or brackets on the top and bottom of the frame. Using your screwdriver or drill, carefully unfasten these bolts while supporting the headboard or footboard with your other hand to prevent it from falling. Keep the hardware organized by placing screws and bolts into a small container or a labeled plastic bag.
Disassembling the Frame
With the headboard and footboard removed, you are left with the side rails and the center support. Identify the bolts or wooden dowels that connect the side rails to the legs. Remove these fasteners systematically, starting from the top and working your way down. If the bed features a slatted center support, unhook or unscrew the brackets that hold it in place before attempting to lift the frame apart.
As you take the frame apart, lay the pieces flat on the floor to avoid bending or scratching the surfaces. Pay attention to the orientation of the parts; taking a few photos with your phone during disassembly can be invaluable when it is time to reassemble the bed.
Handling Hardware and Small Parts
IKEA furniture relies on a variety of cam locks, screws, and Allen wrenches that are often specific to the product line. Avoid mixing hardware from different pieces of furniture, as these components are not always interchangeable.
