How to Copy and Paste YouTube Transcript: Easy Guide

Copying the dialogue from a YouTube video directly into your document or notes saves time and ensures accuracy for quotes, research, or study materials. This process, often called extracting captions, is straightforward once you understand the native features YouTube provides. You do not need third-party tools for the basic function of getting the text from a public video.

Using the Built-In Transcript Feature

YouTube automatically generates captions for most videos, and these same captions hold the full transcript. Accessing this hidden transcript viewer is the most direct method to copy the text. The feature works for both the original video creator's captions and the auto-generated ones, provided they are available in the player.

Opening the Transcript Panel

To reveal the transcript, you must activate the transcript pane while watching the video. This splits the screen to show the spoken words in real-time alongside the timeline. You can toggle this view on and off without leaving the playback page.

Start playing the video in your browser.

Right-click anywhere on the video progress bar at the bottom.

Select "Show transcript" from the context menu that appears.

Copying Text from the Transcript

Once the panel is open, you will see the text divided into timestamped blocks. These timestamps indicate exactly when each line of dialogue occurs. The interface allows you to interact with these blocks, but to get the raw text, you need to use a specific keyboard shortcut.

Click anywhere inside the transcript text area to ensure you are focused on the panel.

Press Ctrl + A (or Cmd + A on Mac) to select all the text.

Press Ctrl + C (or Cmd + C on Mac) to copy it to your clipboard.

Pasting and Organizing the Content

After copying, you can paste the text into any application that accepts plain text, such as a text editor, word processor, or note-taking app. You will notice the timestamps appear as well, which is useful for referencing specific moments but can be cleaned up if you only need the dialogue.

Removing Timestamps

If you require a clean text version without the time codes, a quick find-and-replace operation in a text editor solves this efficiently. The timestamps follow a consistent format, making them easy to identify and strip out.

Paste the transcript into a plain text editor like Notepad, VS Code, or Sublime Text.

Use the "Find and Replace" function (usually Ctrl + H ).

Find the pattern resembling 00:01:23.456 and replace it with nothing.

Run the replacement until all timestamps are removed, leaving only the pure text.

Limitations and Considerations

While the built-in tool is convenient, it has restrictions regarding video length and availability. The transcript feature is typically disabled for videos longer than several hours due to processing limitations. Furthermore, videos that have not been processed for captions, or where the creator has removed them, will not offer this functionality.
