The Core Function: Ignition Timing and Spark Generation

The primary role of a CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) box is to generate a high-voltage spark that jumps the gap of the spark plug. Unlike older magneto systems that generate power directly from the engine's motion, a CDI box stores electrical energy in a capacitor. This storage allows the system to gather a powerful charge and then release it all at once through the ignition coil, creating a much hotter and more consistent spark than traditional points-based systems. This reliability is crucial for modern engines, especially those operating at varying speeds.

Sensing the Engine's Position

For the spark to occur at the perfect moment—specifically when the piston is at the correct position in the compression stroke—the CDI box must know exactly where the engine is in its cycle. This voltage, often ranging from 20,000 to 40,000 volts, is what is needed to arc across the spark plug gap and ignite the air-fuel mixture.
