Taking apart an iPhone 5s requires patience and a steady hand, but the process reveals the sophisticated engineering inside Apple’s iconic device. This guide walks you through the necessary steps, tools, and safety precautions to successfully disassemble your smartphone without causing damage. Understanding the internal layout is the first step toward a successful teardown.
Essential Tools and Preparation
Before you begin, gathering the right tools is critical for a smooth disassembly. Using improper instruments can easily crack the screen or scratch the aluminum body. A high-quality Phillips P5 screwdriver, a reliable pry tool, and a magnetic mat are the bare essentials for this task.
Here is a list of items you should prepare:

Magnetic mat or container for screws
Anti-static wrist strap (optional but recommended)
Good lighting and a clean workspace
Power down the device completely and ensure the battery is at a safe level. Working on a fully charged battery can be hazardous, while a dead battery might cause confusion regarding reassembly steps.
Removing the Bottom Screws and Sim Tray
The initial stage of the disassembly focuses on accessing the internal components by removing the external shell. You will start on the bottom edge of the phone, which is covered by a small plastic SIM card tray. Locate the two small screws flanking the tray and remove them using your P5 screwdriver.
Once the screws are out, gently eject the SIM tray using the pry tool or a paperclip. With these exterior fasteners removed, you can proceed to separate the front panel from the rear casing.
Separating the Display Assembly
This step requires the most caution, as the display connectors are delicate and the ribbon cables are thin. Heat the edges of the phone carefully to soften the adhesive holding the front glass to the metal frame. A heat gun set to a low temperature or a hairdryer works well for this purpose.
Insert the pry tool between the screen and the frame and work your way around the perimeter. Lift the display gently until you can access the connectors at the top of the logic board. You will need to disconnect three cables: the display cable, the touch cable, and the front camera cable. Use the pry tool to lift the black flaps on the connectors and gently pull the ribbons free.
Handling the Battery
The iPhone 5s battery is secured with strong adhesive tape, making removal one of the trickier parts of the process. Do not attempt to pry the battery out with a metal tool, as this can puncture the cell and create a safety hazard. Instead, slide a plastic pry tool or a guitar pick underneath the battery to break the adhesive bond slowly.
